Spotify reached 788 million monthly active users and nearly €5 billion (about $5.6 billion) in third-quarter revenue, but its earnings call focused on how AI agents could reshape music listening.
Co-CEO Gustav Söderström told investors that Spotify is one of the few categories positioned to thrive in the agentic era. He explained that agents excel at handling chores, whereas entertainment is something people want to experience rather than have summarized.
Spotify aims to become the media service people use from any agent, letting listeners request music, podcasts or audiobooks through conversation. It was the first music service to integrate with Meta’s Muse and also works with ChatGPT and Claude. Söderström said adoption inside these agents is strong and that Spotify is leaning into the shift while other companies hold back, in contrast to Amazon, which has blocked Muse from shopping on its platform.
He described Spotify as an intelligent media service that functions as an agent users can talk to and instruct, such as building a running playlist from years of listening history sorted by key and tempo. Söderström stressed that Spotify does not share listener data with partners, instead processing requests through its own systems.
