Snapchat announced Friday that it will no longer recommend fully AI-generated videos through its Spotlight feature, adjusting its recommendation systems to favor content created by real people. The company said it wants Spotlight to remain a space for discovering authentic creativity and original human storytelling, though it clarified that creators can still use Snapchat’s AI tools to enhance or edit their own content.
The move builds on an earlier step Snapchat took in April to reduce visibility of AI-generated content on the platform. It also reflects a broader industry shift toward curbing so-called AI slop, as platforms grapple with rising volumes of low-quality generated content. LinkedIn recently introduced a button allowing users to flag posts that appear AI-generated, while Substack launched a tool to help identify AI-written newsletters. Meta removed a controversial Instagram feature that let users alter photos from public accounts using AI after facing backlash, and YouTube has tightened monetization rules to exclude inauthentic, repetitive, or template-based content, along with AI persona videos addressing sensitive topics like health and finance.
Separately, Snapchat introduced new safety measures last month restricting users aged 13 to 15 to sharing Spotlight posts only with mutual followers, a step aimed at protecting younger users from doxxing.
